Description:
Not only attractive to bees and butterflies, the common milkweed (A. Syriaca) with its round clusters of deep pink flowers is both desirable and long lasting in floral arrangements. As in the case of its cousin, butterfly weed (A. Tuberosa), the ends of the stems filled with a milky sap must be seared after cutting. Milkweed is difficult to transplant due to its long taproot, but mature plants usually self-seed and do well in full sun and well-drained sandy soil. In autumn the silvery-brown pods pop open, releasing small seed heads carried for miles by silky hair-like tufts.
He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd. For the Lord will ransom Jacob and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they. - Jeremiah 31:10,11
