Description:

Equating beauty with function, the ancient Hebrews considered the olive tree not only beautiful, but essential. The widely traded oil pressed from its fruit was highly prized for use in lamps, medicine, food preparation, soap making and religious ceremonies. The pickled fruit provided protein and the tree, itself, wood for furniture.

An early religious symbol of endurance, the olive tree grows well in the rock soil of Eretz Israel, needing little water, thus easily surviving drought. Its habit of sending up offshoots from its base enables the tree to live and produce fruit for hundreds of years even if the original tree is cut to the ground.

...you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,
