References to pomegranates are found throughout the Old Testament. Filled with delicious seeds, they were not only a dietary staple, but were considered symbols of eternal life and divine blessing. The pomegranate motif adorned the hems of the Temple priests’ robes, was carved into scepters carried by the high priests and decorated the columns of Solomon’s Temple.
