Description:
The Western Wall is believed to be all that remains of the ancient Temple Mount. Built by Herod the Great, beginning in 20 B.C., this Temple Mount retaining wall stretches close to fifty feet high and extends another fifty-two feet below ground level. From all over the world, the faithful come to pray to G–d, some to mourn the loss of the Temple in A.D. 70, others to pray for the day the Temple will be rebuilt. Many tuck slips of paper containing personal prayers into the crevices between the ancient blocks of limestone. Here, too, pilgrims “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” a G–d given admonition for a thousand generations. And it is “for Zion’s sake” G–d has placed watchmen on the walls of Jerusalem, watchmen that count angels and believers among their number, believers who love Zion—Jerusalem and the people of Israel.
For Zion’s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not be quiet, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her salvation as a burning torch. - Isaiah 62:1
