Description:
Easy growth habit, prolific multiplication and low susceptibility to disease and insect problems have helped the hemerocallis, better known as the daylily, become one of the most planted perennials. Found in a wide variety of height, forms and colors, each plant produces many buds with each blossom lasting only a day. Utilizing the many varieties with different blooming times provides garden color throughout the summer and into the fall.
Daylilies are easy to propagate by dividing the roots in early spring or late summer after the plants have finished blooming. Preferring full sun, but tolerating late afternoon shade, these lilies need fertile, well-drained, slightly acid soil. An edible perennial, the blossoms and buds are delicious stirfried and, after peeling, the roots can be cooked or sliced into salads.
